Peace Building
USAID supports the peace process and helps to mitigate the negative effects of conflict in Nepal through programs that:
- support national capacity to engage in the peace process, facilitate multiparty dialogue, and institutionalize government peace and conflict resolution structures
- increase access to information and diversify public debate on issues critical to the peace process
- increase engagement between government, civil society and communities to increase government responsiveness to its diverse constituents
- improve the livelihoods of flood affected people through provision of goods and services
- re-establish legitimate and effective security and governance to ensure a stable Nepal
Democratic Governance
USAID assists the re-establishment of representative democracy, strengthening capacity for good governance and promotion of equality and inclusion through programs that:
- support the Election Commission of Nepal to carry out election reform and prepare for elections
- support UN and national human rights organizations to promote respect for human rights
- strengthen the justice system by improving the administration of justice in court, building the capacity of the public defense system, and promoting alternative dispute resolution
- provide training to forest and water user groups to advance democratic governance practices and ensure sustainable management of natural resources
Health and Education
USAID strengthens the Government of Nepal's ability to provide quality health and education services to all its citizens through programs that:
- reduce maternal and child mortality through community-based, life-saving interventions such as vitamin A supplementation and treatment for childhood illnesses
- support voluntary family planning through training; reproductive health education/literacy; strengthening Government policies, systems and quality assurance; and increasing commodity availability
- assist the Government to implement the National HIV/AIDS Operational Plan and continue HIV/AIDS surveillance, prevention, testing, supply chain management, and care and support programs
- help the Government to expand and improve the quality of national early childhood development program
Economic Opportunity
USAID works to increase incomes and employment in rural areas by addressing the lack of economic opportunities, inequitable growth, and social exclusion through programs that:
- provide job training and placement services to disadvantaged groups and displaced populations
- introduce new agricultural production technologies and establish new marketing channels
Humanitarian Assistance
USAID supports conflict-affected communities and mitigates the effects of natural disasters on rural households through programs that:
- provide food assistance to drought-affected populations and Bhutanese refugees
- provide reintegration and humanitarian assistance to displaced populations
- assist communities to develop natural disaster preparedness and response capabilities
